Technology Needs to Make Rich Media Search-Friendly

As the Internet becomes increasingly audio-visual, it is now necessary that strategies be devised in order to make videos and widgets more search engine-friendly. Technology is being developed in order to extract keywords from these online sights and sounds in order to fully optimize the experience. The challenge is finding the best way to do so. DMNews.com reports that speech recognition technology may be utilized since the content found in rich media files first need to be translated into text, thereby making the material searchable.

But it isn't going to be enough. The article cites the work of Pluggd, a video technology provider. Pluggd's approach is two-fold: to extract the keywords and to derive meaning and understand for those keywords in order to improve the search's relevance. The article states that "Pluggd has developed semantic concept models that encapsulate meaning...By using these models, statistical relationships can be established between words. Those statistical relationships can then be classified into categories like sports or finance or politics..."

Making rich media SEO-friendly is the obvious next step, especially for internet marketing. So much more of how users receive their information is through video, and widgets are being utilized by more sites everyday. It is only appropriate that users will eventually have the choice to have the opportunity to search within these and find relevant content in real-time. While developing the means to do so is still a work-in-progress, there should be no doubt that it will come to fruition.
